Many think tricks are just for dogs, but your cat is more than capable of learning the same things (after all, they are smarter than dogs, right?). If you are unsure where to start, here are a few examples of talented kitties and their tricks.
#1 – Sit
Sherlock is Lauren Lorey’s “Cat dog.” She adopted him from the Animal Care and Control Center in Manhattan when he was 1 year old. Now 4, he knows a variety of tricks, including sit.

#2 – Shake
Another one of Sherlock’s tricks, Lorey calls it “give paw.” Sherlock has been super easy to train, she says.
#3 – Give Kisses
Sherlock gives kisses too! This trick is fun and your face won’t end up all slobbery like it would from a dog kiss.
#4 – Fetch
Sherlock just fetched natural, Lorey says. He likes to fetch his mouse toy.
#5 – Lie Down
Claire the Cat loved to lie down on her own, so her owner Rebecca Bogart had no problem adding a cue to the trick.
#6 – Play the Piano
Claire is also musical. She plays the piano and helps teach ukulele.
#7 – Up
Theo, Bogart’s second cat, stands up on his hind legs. This is a fairly easy trick taught by holding treats over your cat’s head, she says.
#8 – High Five
Theo also gives high fives with his paw. Like many of the tricks here, it was taught by taking advantage of what the cat did naturally, which was bat at her hand with his paw.
#9 – Jump Up
Bogart’s third cat, Charlie, learned to jump on whatever chair Bogart pointed to. She taught this simple trick by placing treats on the chair, which he got once he jumped up and sat. She then started to point as he jumped, adding in the hand signal.
#10 – Shell Game
Cats have quick eyes for following small, fast prey and that seems to make them pros at this old game. You can use shells (walnuts work well) or even some kind of identical cup. Put a treat or ball underneath and watch your cat figure out where the item ends up. They seem to pick up this trick naturally.
