10 Reasons Why Calico Cats Are Awesome

There’s no denying that Calico cats are cool. From their interesting tricolor patterns to their well-known sweet personalities, calico cats have captured the hearts of many people all around the world!

1. Calicos are the official State Cat of Maryland!

Because of their color similarities to the Baltimore oriole (the state bird) and the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly (the state insect), calicos were granted their official title on October 1, 2001.

Fun fact: Dating back to the 1870’s in Japan, calico cats were seen as a symbol of good fortune. To this day, these cute little waving-armed cats are placed at the entrances of homes and businesses all over the world.

3. It’s like having 3 cats in one!

4. Pudge the Cat is one of the most famous celebrity cats… and she’s a calico. So cute!

5. Many calico cat keepers claim that their cats are super sweet and thoroughly enjoy cuddle time!

6. Calico cats were worshipped by Ancient Egyptian culture

It is well-known that Ancient Egyptians praised cats for their beauty, but according to history books, the first calico cats came from Ancient Egypt–making them their most prized possessions. Go ahead and worship your little calico queen, too!

7. As many know, calicos are always always female

There are rare exceptions to the rule, but it’s extremely rare. Fun fact: Only 1 out of every 3,000 calico cats born is male.

 8. You can’t breed one, because they only happen by chance… and perhaps a little magic!

9. For the extremely small percentage of calico cats that are male, they are usually born sterile

Talk about population control! Fun fact: Only about 1 in every 10,000 male calico cats is fertile.
