For those of us with love and compassion for animals, seeing a pet in a shelter instead of a home always tugs at our heartstrings. While there are many people who give up their pets because they find them “inconvenient,” it’s important to remember that occasionally, the surrender is just as heartbreaking for the owner as it is for the pet.
This was the case of Miss Molly, a gorgeous senior Himalayan who’d spent her 14-year life with the same woman. Unfortunately, her human developed some health issues, and knew that she could no longer care for her cat the way she deserved.
Miss Molly was surrendered to the Animal Rescue League of Boston, where it was discovered she had a UTI and some kidney issues. On top of being a senior, the odds were not in her favor in terms of getting adopted. But for two months, she patiently waited on the perch in her cage, hoping that someone would give her new family.
Meanwhile, a woman named Olivia was searching for an older cat who needed a forever home during their golden years.
“I found Miss Molly on Petfinder after months of searching for the right cat. I knew I wanted a senior cat because I wanted to make sure an older cat wasn’t left in a shelter for the last few years of their life,” she said in a story by Love Meow.
When she saw the pretty kitty’s picture, she knew she had to meet her, and drove several hours to the shelter. When she approached Miss Molly’s cage, the sweet senior’s response was proof that the two were meant to be.
“Molly was napping on the highest shelf in her enclosure and climbed right down to greet me,” Olivia recalled in the story.
It seemed as though it was love at first sight. “I loved how friendly and outgoing she was, and of course I couldn’t say no to her face. I knew right away that I needed to bring her home, despite her medical issues,” she told Love Meow.
As soon as they got home, Miss Molly had no problem settling in. Despite her age, this fluffy blue-eyed beauty is still full of playfulness, energy, and sass!
Olivia told Love Meow that since that first day, the snuggly Miss Molly has slept in her bed every night. And although she’s a tiny 6.5 pounds, the petite princess has a huge heart and an endless amount of loyalty.
“Miss Molly always greets me when I get home by running to the door and letting out a single meow,” Olivia said in the story. “I couldn’t be happier with my new choice and I’m very happy to have found her.”
Olivia plans to enjoy every day that she’s granted with her new best friend.
“Senior cats still have so much life to live and love to give and I look forward to giving her all of the love and attention she will need for the rest of her life,” she said to Love Meow.
