Maine Coons are one of the most popular cat breeds and we’re not surprised – they’re some really awesome felines! If you’re not familiar with these cool cats, you should take some time to get to know them. After learning more about them, you might find yourself wanting to bring one home!
#1 – They’re the largest domestic cat breed.
They are big, muscular cats that boast an average weight of 13-18 pounds. They average 10-16” tall and up to 48” long including the tail. This, accompanied by their thick coats, makes them look like giants compared to the rest of the house cats.
#2 – They’re very dog-like cats.
Loved by both cat and dog lovers, the Maine Coon is a great choice for someone looking for a more active feline friend. They are playful, social and affectionate and enjoy spending time with their owners. Many people report that their Maine Coons can be taught tricks and enjoy playing fetch like a dog.
#3 – They’re America’s oldest show cat.
Maine Coons are a naturally occurring breed of cat from the United States, where they were domestically bred and developed into a true purebred with a standard. A Maine Coon was the winner of the first cat show in the United States.
#4 – They come in all sorts of colors.
They can be many variations of tabby, solid colors, bi-color and even tortoiseshell. The only colors not allowed by purebred cat organizations are any that genetically indicate they are not purebred Maine Coons. They’re coats are just as unique as their personalities.
#5 – They like playing in water.
While each cat is an individual, Maine Coons are known for being a breed that enjoys playing in water. Because of their winter-made coats, they have water-resistant hair and are actually very good swimmers.
