Ragdolls are a unique breed dating back to the 1960’s and developed in the United States. Coming from an accidental breeding between two non-pedigreed domestic cats, the Ragdoll has grown wildly in popularity due to its fascinating temperament and beautiful looks. If you’re wondering why the Ragdoll is so special, check out these 5 facts.
#1 – Bred for Temperament
While most breeds of any species are bred for temperament, the Ragdoll was specifically created because of its personality. The original two mixed breed litters that were used as foundation stock for the Ragdoll were so gentle they would go limp when picked up – leading to the breeds name.
#2 – Large Size
Ragdolls are one of the largest cat breeds, with females ranging from 8 to 15 pounds and males 12 to 20 pounds. This accompanied with their docile nature makes them very desirable, as they truly do act like stuffed animals at times.
#3 – Algonquin Hotel Resident
The famous New York City Algonquin Hotel is home to a Ragdoll named Matilda III. This Matilda took over after Matilda II, also a Ragdoll, passed away. In fact, Matilda III is the 10th resident cat for the hotel. The tradition of taking in a resident cat started back in the 1930s when a stray wandered in.
#4 – Water Lovers
While most people think all cats hate water, Ragdolls are one of the few breeds that love it. It’s not uncommon for owners of Ragdolls to shoo their cats out of the sink when washing their hands or away from the bathroom when they need to shower. These cats have a love for water that few others possess.
#5 – Blue Eyes
Blue Eyes – A signature feature for Ragdolls is their stunning sky blue eyes, but not all of the cats have them. While the majority keep their blue eyes, other cats have a golden or greenish color to theirs. This color depends largely on the coat color and pattern that the cat has and looks just as beautiful, if you ask us!
