5 Ways To Ease Your Cat’s Allergies

| Published on January 29, 2015

Cats suffer from allergies just like people and they’re constantly looking for relief as well. Since they can’t go to the store and grab some decongestant, however, it’s up to us to help ease their discomfort. Here are some tips for helping your cat get through allergy season comfortably.

#1 – Keep Your Cat Indoors

Although it’s not doable for everyone, keeping your cats indoors is probably one of the best things you can do for them. Not only does it prevent the risk of outside dangers, many cats are allergic to pollen, fungus and mold found frequently outside. If you can at least try and keep your kitty inside during times with a high pollen count you might find that his allergies seem better.

#2 – Wash Beds & Blankets

If your cat has a certain bed or blanket she loves to sleep on, washing it frequently will reduce the amount of allergens that gather there. This will keep your cat comfortable not only because her bed is clean, but because it’s free of nasty dust and pollen.

#3 – Dietary Supplements

There are a number of dietary supplements that are beneficial for dry skin and coat, often caused by allergies. Omega-3 fatty acids are often given to pets with allergies due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Biotin, a B vitamin, is often recommended for cats experiencing dry, itchy skin and coats. Be sure to check with your veterinarian before giving any supplements.

#4 – Antihistamines

Antihistamines are what people typically take when they’re suffering from allergies and they’re available for your cat to take too. Some are prescription only and others can be purchased over the counter. Whatever you choose, never give your cat any medications without first speaking to your veterinarian.

#5 – Dehumidifiers

The same way they benefit people, dehumidifiers can benefit our cats. Improving air quality is essential to keeping your cat’s airways clear and comfortable. Dehumidifiers work by removing excess moisture in the air and making it much more breathable.
