We all try to keep our cats as healthy as possible and many are looking for natural ways to improve overall health and longevity. There are a number of supplements that can safely benefit your cat’s well-being, though you should always check with your veterinarian before starting or changing any supplements.
#1 – Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids, like fish oil, are an excellent way to improve skin and coat condition. They are also natural anti-inflammatories that can help with any ailment causing inflammation, such as arthritis and allergies.
#2 – Catnip
Catnip might not seem like a natural supplement, but it is! Cats love catnip and rightfully so, as it relieves tension and relaxes them. If you want to grow it yourself, letting your cat rub around in the plant can help reduce itchy skin.
#3 – Glucosamine & Chondroitin
This combination is perhaps one of the oldest and most common supplements for pets. Glucosamine and chondroitin work together to improve joint health and reduce inflammation. It’s a perfect supplement for cats with arthritis as it can not only slow the process down, but ease the pain.
#4 – Peppermint
Peppermint is a natural insect repellent and can be a great supplement to add to your cat’s shampoo or spray when you’re struggling with fleas and ticks. Be careful though, because too much peppermint smell can irritate your cat’s airways and cause more problems than benefits. It’s best to buy peppermint products made especially for felines as they’ll likely have the correct amount of peppermint and other ingredients for safe use.
#5 – Probiotics
Just like with humans, probiotics are an excellent way to improve digestive health in cats. Cats with inflammatory bowel disease may especially benefit from the use of probiotics.
#6 – Biotin
Biotin, or vitamin H, is known for its help converting food to energy, but also improves skin, coat and claw health and benefits the thyroid, reproductive organs, nervous system and adrenal glands. Biotin is not an actual vitamin, but is made naturally in the digestive tract. That said, deficiencies can happen and you’ll likely see dry skin and coat as the first symptom.
#7 – Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is another older natural treatment and remains a beneficial supplement. It is mainly used to treat liver disease and improve liver health and function. It also aids the flow of bile from the gall bladder and helps cats with digestive ailments. Milk thistle is also a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
