Cynthia Bennett and her boyfriend love hiking in the Colorado wilderness, and back in 2014, they added a four-legged friend to the family. A brown and white puppy captured the heart of Bennett at an adoption event, even though she had her sights set on getting a Golden Retriever mix. But when the 3 1/2 month old mutt trotted over to her, she knew he was meant to be theirs.
“He just curled up into my lap and went belly up and flipped his head over my arm,” Bennett recalled in a story by The Dodo. “And from then, I decided that he was coming home with us.”
Even though he was young, it was clear that the pup, who they named Henry, was going to be a big boy.
“They said he was only 3 and a half months, but he was like five times bigger than the other 3 and a half-month old puppies. And he had these long legs, and the body type of a wolf or husky.”
Just a few days after welcoming Henry into their home, the outdoorsy couple were delighted to discover that he, too, had a streak of wanderlust after taking him on his first hike.
The three adventurers have enjoyed many outings together ever since, and a few months ago, Bennett decided it was time to add another member to their pack.
“I really wanted a rescue kitten,” she said in the story. “I’d looked for five months, and I saw lots of different kittens, but none of them really had the right personality or fit. I knew that I wanted to take him anywhere — camping, hiking.”
That’s when they found the purrfect companion to round out their quartet – a Siamese kitten mix named Baloo.
“He ran right up to me,” she remembered. “And he was the one who played, but he wasn’t the most rowdy.”
Once home, Baloo and Henry made fast friends. Together, they love to snuggle, play, and explore!
“If I touch Henry’s leash, [Baloo] will start screaming at the door… He’s very vocal,” Bennett told The Dodo. “I get a lot of questions about how we got him used to [going on outings]… But he really loves it. He really wants to go outside.”
