When cats go to a shelter, no one ever knows how long they will be there for. Some lucky cats don’t stay long. But for others, they learn to live life in a shelter because they go unadopted–many for years. At the Worcester County Humane Society, a sweet tabby kitten came in at 3 months of age, and as the days went by, she became a permanent resident at the shelter.
They named the cat “Momma,” and as the days turned into weeks and months, 12 years went by and poor Momma was still there at the Worcester County Humane Society.
For Patrick Campbell Priest, he’s always loved cats. So, he decided to dedicate his time to helping animals in need at his local humane society in Maryland where he lives. “I want to take them all home with me but that’s not very practical, so I bring myself to them,” he said to delmarvanow. “They need someone to take care of them.”

It was then that Patrick developed a bond with one special tabby cat, and when he was ready to add another cat to his brood at home, little Momma was the one. He’d asked the shelter which cat had been there the longest, and he knew that it was his job to give her a loving home for the rest of her life.
“I just think they deserve a home at some point in their life,” Priest said. “As well as we try to treat them here, it’s still not the same as having the individual attention and the love they get in a home.”

Even though Momma is considered a senior kitty, she had no problems whatsoever making herself at home with her new cat dad. “She walked in there like she owned the place and she’d been there her whole life,” he added.

“Every time I see her, she looks at me and she starts purring,” he said. “She’s grateful to be in a home, but I’m grateful to have her because she brings me a lot of joy.”
