“Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur…” It’s Sheldon’s favorite lullaby on The Big Bang Theory, but now his love interest, Amy Farrah Fowler – known in the real world as Mayim Bialik – can sing it to a special new feline.
Bialik welcomed little Adamantium, an adorable gray and white kitten, to her family earlier this week. Nicknamed “Addie,” the shelter cat was born with a serious genetic condition that causes her sternum to grow into her chest cavity.
Bialik introduced Addie to her 2.1 million Instagram followers on Tuesday.
Addie’s condition is known as Pectorus Excavatum, and can lead to heart and respiratory issues as she grows. Luckily, rescuers at Shelter Chic in New York made sure she received the best veterinary care prior to her adoption. This included a rather complicated surgery described by the group in an Instagram post:
“@purepawsvet consulted with a specialist and performed surgery on her yesterday- placing a splint with sutures wrapped around the bones in the sternum to pull it into proper position as she grows.”
She was then fitted with a cast to protect her as she heals. The splint placed in her chest during surgery inspired Bialik to give her the unique name Adamantium, which is a fictional metal element described in Marvel Comics.
Addie is recovering well, but her adorable cast – decked out in bright red and gold like Iron Man’s suit – will have to stay on for a few more weeks.
Bialik is mom to two human children – Miles, 11, and Frederick, 8 – as well as other cats she has adopted over the years. She told ModernCat.com that she considers her senior kitty, Esau to be “her first son.” He is a hairless Peterbald she purchased from a pet store before she became a vegan and animal rights advocate.
She now crusades for pet adoption, having partnered with PetSmart Charities in 2015 for their #MeowOUT campaign. The movement was designed to help promote shelter cat adoption and encourage cat lovers to show their feline pride by MeowOUT-ing themselves.
