In Hispanic culture it is traditional to mark a young girl’s transition into womanhood with a massive 15th birthday celebration known as a quinceañera party.
So when the Olavarria family realized their beloved cat Luna’s big day was approaching, they decided she deserved to be treated like a princess, too!
The Olavarrias discovered Luna wandering helplessly on the side of the road when she was just 3-weeks-old. They took her in and welcomed her as a member of the family, showering her with all the love and attention a kitty could ask for.
Angel Olavarria – Luna’s “brother” – told The Dodo:
“Luna is an absolute sweetheart, loves curling up with people and loves laying on her back on the floor. We have spoiled her with abundant love and she has outlived all of our pets. On her 15th birthday we decided to give our little cheese ball a surprise quinceañera.”
Angel (and Luna)’s mom realized last year that the sweet orange tabby had been with them for 14 years, and the idea to throw a quinceañera the following year began to take shape. She knew that the party had to include all of Luna’s friends and family, plenty of indulgent food, and a traditional tres leches cake.
And no birthday party would be fit for a princess without the perfect dress! Luna donned a sleeveless baby pink frock with a satin bow on her special day.
“My mom found the dress on Amazon,” Angel said. “I totally thought my mom was joking when she said she was going to order a dress for her, but my mom never jokes about our pets.”
Luna’s candlelit feast was laid out on a pink satin tablecloth with feathered white garland, and the dining room was accented with pink balloons, flowers, princess figurines and other festive decor.
The special kitty was placed at the head of the table as 12 of her favorite humans helped her celebrate 15 wonderful years as a member of the Olavarria clan.
“She was such a good sport through the whole thing that we think she actually knew we were celebrating her,” Angel said. “She loved it even more when we opened up a nice can of tuna for her.”
The special senior even tolerated her massive birthday tiara long enough for friends and family to snap a few photos. The tuna was probably a good motivator!
