To say Corbin is a big dog is an understatement. As a Great Dane, he’s 150 lbs. of legs and love. The better words to describe him are ‘gentle giant’.
His mom, Karen, told the Dodo people will cross the road he’s so big, “yet they don’t know that he’s terrified of his own shadow.”
You see, Corbin’s heart is bigger than he is, and it’s kittens that make this huge guy melt.
Karen has been fostering kittens for a few years in conjunction with the Ontario SPCA & Humane Society. She says the benefits of helping to raise someone’s future best friend are immense, but she also shared, “I must admit though that the one who seems to benefit the most from fostering is our dog, Corbin.”
Corbin’s Kittens
The foster kittens in Karen and Corbin’s care are enough to make anyone smile, but for Corbin, “the highlight of his day is when he is allowed to come and spend some time with the kittens.”
At first, though, Karen was careful to keep Corbin separated from the foster kittens. He was just so big, she worried about an accidental paw stepping in the wrong place. Plus, his size causes him to be a bit clumsy.
“He trips over everything, he sits on people, he sits on our dogs.”
But one day, Corbin had enough of Karen’s worry, darting past her into the kitten room. He simply sat down and told his mom, “I’m going to be gentle, let me see the kitten.”
And Corbin indeed proved to be the gentlest dog kitten foster dad ever even though he was so big to their so little! At 150 lbs. versus half a pound, “the kittens are smaller than his paw. They’re smaller than his nose.”
He likes to give the kittens kisses with his big dog tongue, but he’s ever so careful of the tiny kitty babies, acting like a purrfect mama cat!
One Kitten in Purrticular
Of the foster kittens Corbin has cared for, one kitten stands out from the litter as his best bud. Jesper just loved the giant dog from the moment she met him. The little tabby kitten enjoyed her time snuggled up close to her big friend.
“She would chew on his paws a little bit and I think it was just her way of saying, ‘Hey, Corbin, I’m here. I’m beside you. Hang out with me.”
Karen explained watching the pair form the bond was so special and fun and “the two of them just connected. It was sweet.”
Now, Jesper has gone onto her forever home, and while Corbin misses her, the gentle giant knows the goal is adoption and his mom is so proud of her pup for his loving heart.
“The fact that he has this capacity, I just adore it in him,” said Karen.
