Havahart®, the leading manufacturer of humane live animal traps, has recently announced the launch of the Havahart Shelter Helpers contest. This nationwide contest seeks to recognize local animal shelters that go above and beyond in their feral cat trap-neuter-return (TNR) efforts.
A TNR program is the caring approach to reducing feral cat overpopulation. It involves humanely trapping feral cats, having them spayed or neutered, vaccinated and then returned to their cat colony to live out their lives in the outdoors.
The Havahart Shelter Helpers have asked people to nominate their favorite nonprofit shelter for a chance to win a Havahart Feral Cat Trap Rescue Kit and a $1,000 grand prize. Eligible shelters hold a 501(c)3 status and execute or work with TNR programs. Each finalist will receive one free Havahart® Feral Cat Trap Rescue Kit.
A voting round will begin on July 5, 2016. Participants can visit the Havahart blog or the Havahart Facebook Page to vote for the shelter they want to win the $1,000 grand prize. The shelter with the most votes at the end of the voting period on October 5, 2016 will be awarded the cash prize.
“Less than five percent of the approximately 73 million feral or stray cats are neutered or spayed, leaving all the unneutered cats to continue reproducing and growing the feral cat population,” says Carlos Medina, Associate Brand Manager at Havahart. “The high rate of reproduction among feral cats is why they account for eighty percent of the cats that barrage animal shelters. Sadly, the vast majority of feral cats that are turned in to animal shelters are subjected to euthanasia.”
TNR programs face the challenge of humanely and safely trapping feral cats. Live feral cat traps are made for the purpose of this task. Endorsed by top rescue leagues around the country, Havahart® Feral Cat Trap Rescue Kits are easy to set, bait and release.
The Havahart Rescue Kit comes with a burlap cover to help camouflage the metal frame and soothe the cat once it is trapped. A trap divider allows users to easily feed and water the trapped cat without handling the animal. Using the trap divider to isolate the cat at one end or the other, the trap can be opened from either end for safe cleaning and feeding without risk of the cat escaping.
“At Havahart, we care a lot about animals, so we wanted to recognize the animal shelters and rescue programs that are doing great work to humanely control the feral cat population and ensuring the best possible life for these cats,” says Medina. “Many shelters have joined the TNR movement, but the process can be tricky without the right resources. That’s where the Havahart Shelter Helpers can help.”
Visit the Havahart Facebook page or blog between July 5 and October 5, 2016 to cast your vote for your favorite animal shelter!
