Are you considering giving a pet a forever home for the holidays? How about two?
This adorable cat and dog pair has been inseparable since they were found in late October, wandering along a highway in Kentucky. They were spotted by a good Samaritan who pulled over to rescue the strays, but had trouble getting the little black Chihuahua into the car until he knew his tabby friend was coming too. Once they managed to snag both, the two were immediately taken to the Franklin County Humane Society, where the staff quickly realized that they would need to stick together. The pair was dubbed Milo and Otis, after the adventurous duo from the 1980s film.
Shelters usually keep their cats and dogs in separate areas, but FCHS had to bend a few rules for Milo and Otis. Milo, although a friendly guy, doesn’t care for other cats but has bonded with Otis, so they’ve been allowed to share a living area. Aside from their extraordinary relationship, they seem to be normal pets. They’re both affectionate, Milo a laid-back cat, and Otis a playful Chihuahua. They spent their Thanksgiving in a kennel, but as the winter holidays creep closer, the humane society staff hopes to get them into their forever home – together.
Franklin County Humane Society knows that this pair is unique, and will need an equally unique home. One without any other cats, that is willing to welcome both a new kitty and a dog in at the same time. In an effort to keep them together the shelter has lowered their adoption rates for just these two. The usual rates are $35 for cats and $75 for dogs, but whoever adopts these guys gets to take home both for just $40.
Shelter manager Nancy Benton has high hopes that Milo and Otis will get to spend their Christmas together in a home where they both belong. She tells The State Journal, “They would make great pets for any situation, I think, as long as they can stay together.”
