Ross Lebeau, of Cypress, Texas, isn’t exactly your typical drug addict. In fact, he isn’t an addict at all. But in December when his car was searched during a traffic stop, he was arrested after authorities found about half a pound of methamphetamine in his car. Lebeau was arrested and spent three days in jail when field tests came back positive for the drug. The entire time, however, Lebeau insisted that there were no drugs in his car and the substance authorities found and tested was not methamphetamine.
It’s difficult to argue with field tests, but the results were surprising. It turns out Lebeau was telling the truth after all – when the Institute of Forensic Science tested the substance, they found it wasn’t methamphetamine, it was cat litter. Say what?! Yes, you read that right. The meth found in Lebeau’s vehicle wasn’t meth at all. In fact, it wasn’t even close. “They thought they had the biggest bust in Harris County,” Lebeau told Fox2 Now. “This was the bust of the year for them.” He said his dad had put the cat litter in a sock to leave in his car so that the windows wouldn’t fog up.
As expected, the ordeal has caused Lebeau to miss work and a lot of embarrassment, having made the news as a criminal until the final test results came back. He doesn’t blame the deputies, who were just doing their job, but has issues with the field tests – and rightfully so. How could cat litter come back positive as methamphetamine? Further, he has asked for a public apology and we certainly think he deserves one. Spending three days in jail and being publicly humiliated over having cat litter in your car is a mistake that should not be taken lightly.
