Flowers, chocolate, and jewelry are what you’d expect from Mother’s Day, but one lucky mom got a little something extra. Renee, the Feline Care Manager at Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters in Atlanta, Georgia, was in a difficult situation. She found a sick mother cat with a litter of kittens struggling to survive in Jasper County.

Extremely dehydrated, the new mama was unable to care for her defenseless family. She couldn’t produce the milk they desperately needed for nourishment, and when Renee stepped in, the situation was bleak. Spring means warmer temperatures and fresh flowers, but it also means kittens.
Hundreds of unplanned kittens are born between March and June, and animal shelters like Furkids struggle to keep up. With so many kittens and cats in need, there simply aren’t enough resources to go around.

Without money to pay for their care, Renee’s kittens were likely to be euthanized. As part of the Furkids family, Renee knows how much time, space, and money is needed to care for sick newborn kittens, but this particular family held a special place in her heart. She was devastated about the fate that seemed unavoidable, but then her husband, Fred, got an idea.

He decided to skip the cliche Mother’s Day gifts and give his wife what she really wanted—hope for the family of cats. Fred made a sizable donation to Furkids to pay for the care of the mother cat and all her babies. While other mothers were happy to relax on their special day, Renee was thrilled to spend Mother’s Day getting the cats comfortable in their temporary home at the shelter.

Furkids will treat the mother cat and give the kittens the care they need to grow strong and healthy. When the time is right, they’ll be introduced to the general population of adoptable cats who await forever families at Georgia’s largest no-cage shelter. Thanks to Renee, Fred, and the staff at Furkids, they’re on their way to new lives in happy homes.
