This story highlights the incredible strength of a mother’s love. Alissa Smith, co-founder of Wrenn Rescues, was alerted about the need to rescue 10-day-old kittens. Shelter workers in Downey, California, had saved them but required additional support due to their expertise. Alissa explained to Love Meow, “There were only 15 minutes left, and no one else was able to take them, but thankfully, the networking group got them out safely, and a wonderful woman named CJ transported them all the way out to Ventura County, California to us.”
Initially, these kittens were found in a yard with their mother, who fled when humans approached. At the center, Ashley, a foster volunteer, and Jenifer Hurt, another co-founder of the rescue, took over their care, which included bottle-feeding. “The kittens were very obviously well taken care of by their cat mama. When orphaned kittens land in the shelter, they don’t usually see their mama again. Another important reason to leave kittens where they are found (and wait for the mom), instead of taking them to the shelter,” Jenifer noted.
The caregivers were ready to bottle-feed the kittens until they could eat on their own, but an amazing development occurred! The rescuers who first took the kittens to the shelter found the mother cat searching for her offspring near their home. They captured her and brought her back to her kittens the next day. Initially, she was timid and scared at the shelter, but she relaxed when Ashley introduced her to one of the kittens.
“I held a baby up to her, and she visibly calmed down. We coaxed her out of the carrier with it. She went right over and curled up in the middle of her kittens, purring. They all went right to her and started nursing.”
The mother cat then began purring and nursing her babies, making for a touching reunion. The next morning, Ashley was awakened by the sounds of the mother cat’s content purring as she cuddled her kittens, unwilling to let them go. We are delighted that this family was reunited and thriving today thanks to diligent humans with hearts of gold. Shout out to Wrenn Rescues and Love Meow for sharing this incredible story!
